Sac State Sunset - 05/21/09 All Local Music/Last show of the semester!

June 7th, 2009

What’s good, mi gente?!

It’s been one of the longest semesters of our career! Due to time constraints, compensations, and tackling way too many projects at once, I’m gonna have to cut back on the podcast recaps!

I’ve liked being able to throw down an almost play-by-play of our podcasted shows, but the truth is I don’t have time anymore to provide such details. Así es la vida.

From now on, show recaps will be brief, but now will always include a foto with our guest(s) or whatever the highlight of the show was.

So now, please hit play, sit back, and enjoy this podcast - featuring ALL local music, plus a few surprises from B-Unit and I. The show’s playlist is below the foto…

Sac State Sunset - 04/16/09 with rapper Boobee

April 26th, 2009

April = allergies, mi gente!

This is the podcast recap for April 16, 2009. Please enjoy nasally voice, thanks to allergies, at no extra charge!

Tonight I wanted to highlight what I’ve been taking note of when I publish our podcasts…I write down ridiculous, out-of-context statements and clip them up and add them to my sound effects collection..

So right after B-Unit arrived, I played some of my new clips. They include some of B-Unit’s laughs, Rooster’s exclamation quotes, and Squidy-Bo’s (of 3 Stackz) advice. Hit up the podcast to hear what I’m talking about…

I gave everybody an update on how my date went at the zoo. Thanks to 3 Stackz and B-Unit, I had good game at the zoo with a lil girlie I’m pursuing…and she likes me! Haha sweet! Check the podcast to hear the story on my lil date at the zoo. ( http://djdubv.podbean.com )

B-Unit tells us her story of how a lil black kid was making fun of her Obama t-shirt and how she almost went bad on him! Lol

In the Sports report, B-Unit revealed the names of a few freshman who will be coming on the hornet basketball squad this Fall. For example, a 280 pound, six foot nine baller! Damn! The Sac State rowing team hosted the first-ever Lake Natoma Invitational. It all went down during the weekend of April 18. See how they did, as well as all other Hornet Sports at www.HORNETSPORTS.com and catch the rest of the Sports Report on the podcast at http://djdubv.podbean.com

After a song break, Rooster called in to talk to us…about something. While he was driving to Sacramento from Santa Cruz while on the phone with us, we were playing voice-drops of him while he was talking to us.

Here are Rooster’s Party Tips to Avoid Being Arrested:

  1. Don’t Drink…too much
  2. If you’re “over the edge,” make sure you’re with cool friends.
  3. And if you’re “over the edge” all the time, then you’re screwed.

** Rooster has no game with girls **

Christian, B-Unit’s cousin, called in from Arizona to give us a shout-out! They stay listening to us at Arizona State University!

In the studio after the break was rapper Boobee, California born and raised!

We first heard about Boobee through AngelACE, who did a track with him called Newsflash.

Boobee chatted with us about how he came to be a rapper. Starting in high school, Boobee started spitting rhymes to just mess around. With positive feedback and insight from his peers, he stuck to it and started writing more serious rhymes. Since then, Boobee started touring local high schools and venues.

We told some stories on the air between fresh new tracks by Boobee himself. Boobee told us he’s working the internet circuit with his music while working on album to be released later this year.

Find out why he’s called Boobee by listening to the podcast: http://djdubv.podbean.com

Funny stuff!

Boobee said he wrote his song “CA” to shoot down the assumptions that people have about California-born music lately. He wanted to make a new anthem people could rock to and help rep California in a new way. Check it out!

If you wanna get yourself some Boobee tracks, you can look him up on iTunes.

One of Boobee’s biggest inspirations right now is Lupe Fiasco. Althought Lupe said he’s gonna retire, I don’t believe he will…Just look at Jay-Z, Michael Jordan, etc.

We also talked about our experience at the Mistah F.A.B. concert.

Basically, you need to put Boobee on your radar because at only 19 years old, he has accomplished more than most rappers on the scene today.

Keep it locked because in due time, you will only hear more about rapper Boobee!

Okie Dokie, here is the playlist:

  1. Mujeres en El Club – Wisin y Yandel ft. 50 Cent
  2. Let’s Get It On - TNT
  3. Hit The Highway – Light-Skinned Creole
  4. Dime – Angel y Khriz
  5. Blame it – Jamie Foxx
  6. CA – Boobee
  7. Rubbish - Boobee
  8. One Way Ticket - Boobee

And that’s how we did it!

Special thanks to Boobee for seeking us out and being on the show!

Keep it locked because there are only a handful of shows left before the semester ends!

Nos vemos, te cuidas, y te bañas,

Sac State Sunset - 04/09/09 with 3 Stackz

April 12th, 2009

We’re all up in Aprilation, mi gente!

From the very beginning it was me and B-Unit this time holding down the show from top to bottom!

Catching up on our week’s happenings, B-Unit and I discussed the BET show “Baldwin Hills.” Basically, it’s the O.G. “O.C!” listen to the podcast to hear this plus the whole show!

B-Unit vents about how dudes stand in a line all over school and just wait to “get at” girls that walk by. Things like “I see you peekin’ girl!” B-Unit wishes that she could just wear her spring gear in peace!

^^ This turned into an energized debate followed by an instructional recreation of the scenarios B-Unit says girls face every day at Sac State. I played the fella trying to get at B-Unit, and she stopped me when I was doing wrong and commended me for doing right…This turned into a pretty funny replay – check it on the podcast; it’s right after Ray J’s “Sexy Ladies.”

After all that madness, B-Unit delivered her Sports Report, although she almost forgot that she even had one to do! There are some legit females signing onto the Hornet’s women’s softball for their freshman year. Sac State Baseball played their last pair of double headers this Easter weekend in the Hornet’s nest. Find out how they did by hitting up www.HORNETSPORTS.com Hornet Track & Field has two Big Sky players of the week. Find out who they are, as well as catch the rest of the Sports Report, by listening to the podcast  http://djdubv.podbean.com

Coming back from the break, B-Unit and I talked about the Sacramento Zoo and my special lady of interest that I will be taking there. If you didn’t know, the Zoo gets poppin’ off in the afternoons on the weekends! It’s the perfect place for a first date…

As we anxiously awaited the arrival of 3 Stackz, we got a phone call from Kron of Mentes Diferentes. Kron gave us major props and let everyone know that Mentes Diferentes has a collaboration show/block party going down Aril 25th at the Washington Neighbordhood Center in Sacramento. It’s called Arte y Música – check their myspace for more info at: www.myspace.com/mentesdiferentesofficial

Fresh in the building was Jay-Spaz and Rell P., two thirds of the rap trio phenomenon known as 3 Stackz.

Always mixing work with play, ‘Spaz and Rell gave caught us up on what they’ve been doing since we last threw down an interviewation. They just released their latest mix tape, Da Best Damn Trio, which is currently available for download off their Myspace: www.myspace.com/3stackzmusic. Apart from that, they are working on their first album and are looking to get signed…you gotta feel it!

Making Sacramento their home and establishing themselves quite nicely, Jay Spaz and Rell P told us how they write music, work out the beats, and the businessmen’s breakfasts that they have where they hold meetings to work towards their industry readiness.

3 Stackz will start filming their first music video for their new single “I’m Ready” in early May and will need to recruit a small army of video girls for the set! If you’re interested and ready, hit them up at www.myspace.com/3stackzmusic!

You gotta listen to B-Unit explain to 3 Stackz and me how to approach ladies the right way. Jay Spaz and Rell P told us how they spit their game. Hit up the podcast already to hear this ridiculous segment: http://djdubv.podbean.com.

“We don’t want no Beetlejuices!” – Jay Spaz.

The explanation of their song Raquet Man is in this podcast, along with my re-enactment of what Venus and Serena Williams sound like while playing tennis…too much! Haha

Real quick, Jay Spaz & Rell P fill the listeners in on what they like…hit the podcast to figure out what I’m talking about.

If you were wondering where Squidy-Bo, the third member of 3 Stackz, was, he called in to complete the trifecta – the three-headed monster – 3 Stackz!

Squidy-Bo put his two-cents in on their new mixtape, their future plans and all the rest of their “terrificness.”

Don’t fool yourself – 3 Stackz told us what their qualifications are for the video girls that they are seeing for their new music video. Check the podcast and find out if you make the cut: http://djdubv.podbean.com

“6,000 pounds is not cute!” – Squidy-Bo.

And that’s pretty much how we all threw it down.

Come, evaluate the playlist:

1. Agarrala – Tito el Bambino feat. Plan B

2. Sexy Ladies – Ray J feat. Truth

3. Let The Beat Knock – The Desperados

4. Newsflash – AngelACE feat. Boobee

5. Te Amo - Makano

6. I’m Ready – 3 Stackz

7. That’s My Baby Right There – 3 Stackz

8. To Da Sto – 3 Stackz  feat. E-40 sample

Big shout-out to Jay Spaz, Rell P and Squidy Bo (3 STACKZ) for staying on their game and giving us legit music to play on our show!

We have rapper Boobee up in the studio next week. Until then….

Nos vemos, te cuidas, y te bañas,

Sac State Sunset 03/26/09 with DJ Remex

April 4th, 2009

Throw it back, mi gente!

It’s me, dub v, giving you the recap from our Throwback Thursday show with special guest, in-house DJ, DJ Remex!

DJ Remex started mixing back in his days of high school. He said that when he went into his first night club, he was captivated by how the DJ was controlling and moving the crowd. Ever since then, Remex has been trying to “make something of (himself).”

You can catch DJ Remex doing a live set coming up at Record Store Day here in Sacramento. It goes down all day April 18, 2009 from 9AM to 5PM. For more information, check the flyer at www.KSSU.com .

Mixing the most legit NEW old school, Remex gave us a quick mix down before B-Unit came in to do the Sports Report. Yes, we did put on a dirrty dirrty track, so we had to take a quick pause and make a correction to please the FCC! Haha – it wouldn’t be fun without a lil excitement like that, eh?

Kicking off the Sports Report, B-Unit said that Track and Field star Nayima Goodwin dominated the Heptathalon in UC Davis last weekend. Goodwin cleared all kinds of high jumps to tie for second place. Sac Sate Baseball dropped a battle to the Oregon Ducks, putting them at 12 and 9 in the season. With an open mind, they looked forward to hosting some home games this weekend against Menlo College. Find out how they did at www.hornetsports.com . For the full Sports Report, hit up the podcast to stream the show at: http://djdubv.podbean.com .

I had to take off from the show early because I was hosting a game show for the Journalism Association of Community College (www.JCCC.com).

From there on out, it was all B-Unit and DJ Remex! In all fairness, I just barely taught B-Unit how to work all the controls in the studio, so there might be a few little errors in the podcast, but don’t judge her! Judge me! I sprung my bailout on her hella last-minute!

Ni modos, REMEX IS LEGIT! We plan on having him back for next month’s Throwback Thursday! B-Unit, you are a baller!

There’s no playlist this week because Remex was in the mix the whole show! I highly recommend you check out this podcast for some legit NEW old school cuts mixed by an up-and-coming DJ!

Until the next, mi gente!

Nos vemos, te cuidas, y te bañas,

Sac State Sunset - 03/19/09 with Mentes Diferentes

March 21st, 2009

Aye, mi gente!

Another week, another award-winning show!

So, the recap for March 19, 2009 goes just like this:

Fresh from our naps, B-Unit and I started things off with a lil catch-up. Shout-out to Momma Dukes a.k.a B-Unit’s mom!

Real quick, my bad for confusing “One More Drink” with “Blame it on the Alcohol!” Damn, tell me you can’t keep all these tracks featuring T-Pain straight! I mean, for real!

The first caller of the night was inevitably Rooster, who disturbed us only to have his call drop out, thanks to Gettro PCS aka MetroPaisa!!! Haha, well, he’ll call back…

Damn Rooster and his no-action-getting’ phone!!!

Our topic for the first hour was “Things girls/guys do that girls/guys don’t care about.” Right off the back, B-Unit had a grand topic to cover for us fellas:

B-Unit is at the bus stop, and a guy comes up to her and says “hey lil mama.”

B-Unit said, “Never is that my name….You could say excuse me to get my attention, first of all. Don’t come at me like ‘hey sexy, you lookin good!’ That is not attractive at all.”

OK, comprendo.

I revealed what I feel is what girls are doing too much with….But to hear it, you gotta hit up the podcast! Sac State Sunset Podcast site: http://djdubv.podbean.com

After a some Tito el Bambino, Rooster came back on the phone requestation line: “Vince! My call got dropped! Relax, I was in the grocery store!”

Rooster filled the ladies in on what it is that us guys don’t care about: “A really ridiculous amount of jewelry.”

Rooster referenced a chick walking down the hall with hella jewelry to somebody walking to down the hall with a pack of Tic-Tacs.

In response, B-Unit explained to us that the jewelry she wears relates to her current mood that day…Yes, you need to listen to the podcast to understand this! http://djdubv.podbean.com

Right up after, B-Unit brought the Sports Report to the air. In Softball, Sac State won and lost its first two games of the 17th annual Capitol Classic Softball Tournament. Hornets beat Colorado State 8-7 but fell to BYU 9-2. The Sac State Gymnastics goes into the WACK Championships! It all goes down Saturday March 21, 2009 here in the Hornet’s Nest. Mount-off starts at 6PM; find out how they did at www.hornetsports.com. This is just taste of the Sports Report; catch the whole thing in the podcast, streaming @ http://djdubv.podbean.com.

**March Madness gets B-Unit “hot and bothered.”**

Jackie the Boss called in after the commercial break to fill us in on what guys do that girls don’t care about, and vice versa.

Not wasting any time, Jackie explained how it is not cool for a guy to try and get at any chick using the phrases “hey!,” “hay, baby girl!,” or “DAMN you thick!” Apparently these are definite declines in her book.

Jackie and I did a re-enactment of how this might go down….listen to the podcast to get the full laugh…

Before letting us go, Jackie also explained that yelling out where you are from does not increase your chances of getting a girl interested in you:

“I’m from East Oakland! I’m from East Oakland!” – not the right thing to do.

The list doesn’t stop there, hit up the podcast at http://djdubv.podbean.com to get it all!

We had to take a break after that segment, but after a few more songs, Mentes Diferentes was in the studio!

Freshly representing the Latino music scene, Mentes Diferentes, a.k.a. The Desperados, talked about who they are, where they come from, and what the early days were like.

Vicious V, Reckless Reaction and Kron are the laid-back, open-minded gentlemen that make up The Desperados. Don’t let their easy-going manner fool you, however, because behind the mic, pencil, and guitar they are a forced to be reckoned with.

Reflecting on previous performances and being in the studio, the Desperados said that some of their influences and inspirations include Mexican artists from back in the ‘70s.

Check out the podcast to listen to their own words and their own music: http://djdubv.podbean.com

When writing music, Vicious V said he tries to write is like a story, but it’s all coming from freewill and real life experiences.

Keeping it on lock, The Desperados have three studios sprinkled throughout the campus as well as a full “camp” that represents Mentes Diferentes, collectively. It’s a small army of musical soldiers ranging from The Brown Hustlers to Ivan Franco. Don’t know who these guys are? You gotta hit up the Mentes Diferentes myspace page for the 411: http://www.myspace.com/mentesdiferentesofficial

“Music is a feeling, and we just do it, we feel it, we hear it, we think it, and we just throw it down.” – Reckless Reaction.

The Desperados’ recording sessions are based mainly on jam sessions and get studio get-togethers. Reckless Reaction, el ingeniero, records the sessions and from there, it gets molded into the tracks of music that you hear on their myspace page.

Basically, if you didn’t already have Mentes Diferentes on your radar, you need to check up on what you’ve been missing!

The Desperados have a handful of shows coming up this Spring – hit up their myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/mentesdiferentesofficial) for the calendar of all the events!

OK OK, alli esta el playlist:

1. One More Drink - Ludacris feat. T-Pain

2. Under - Tito El Bambino

3. Dem Jeans - Duda

4. Ojos Que No Ven - Alexis y Fido

5. Drop it Keep It Sexy Tho - Dice

6. Better Man - Los The Desperados (Mentes Diferentes)

7. Let the beat knock – The Desperados (Mentes Diferentes)

8. I’m a Hustla – The Desperados (Mentes Diferentes)

Big thanks to Mentes Diferents, all our callers and listeners, and beyond!

Next Thursday is Throwback Thursday; we’ll be spinning the new oldschool with special guest DJ Remex!

Until the next –
